Match Against Diabetes Set for Today

first_imgIn view of the severity of the diabetes and its effect on Liberians, the Liberia Diabetes Testing Center (LDTC) will today kick off an awareness campaign in the city of Monrovia. According to a press release yesterday, LDTC director James Momoh said the awareness in the city of Paynesville is aimed at engaging residents and providing them the needed education on diabetes prevention, management and treatment. He said diabetes, “which is an autoimmune disease, is gradually consuming the population due to the lack of awareness on the prevention of the disease which is often associated with life style changes.”He explained that Type 2 Diabetes, which runs in families, is the common type of hyperglycemia in Liberia. It requires life style changes, and is manageable if individuals suffering from the condition can get tested to know the status of their sugar levels. He said people that will participate in today’s awareness campaign will be wearing t-shirts, displaying banners depicting diabetes prevention, management and its treatment.Momoh said discussions are currently going on to expand services provided at the center to other communities in the city of Monrovia to make diabetes testing and awareness accessible to more Liberians in Monrovia and its environs.“Diabetes is only manageable if the people are provided the opportunity to get tested,” Momoh emphasized. At the testing center on Front Street opposite the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSA), the release said many Liberians are currently benefiting from LDTC services.Meanwhile, the release said participants will also have the opportunity to get evaluated on the status, including hypertension and other manageable medical conditions.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
