MySpace to Unveil Integration With Sites Around the Web, Using Open Standards

first_img8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Tags:#Data Portability#news#NYT#web#Web Development marshall kirkpatrick MySpace will announce in the next few weeks a major new feature being added to its MySpaceID product that will allow third-party websites to write updates into the MySpace activity feed just like Facebook Connect, but will also incorporate open semantic microformat code in order to comprehend what those updates are about and make more sophisticated update highlighting and recommendation decisions. It’s a major move being worked on with both the Activity Streams and Open Social communities – it could push the rest of the web, outside of Facebook, in a direction that supports radical app innovation through the creation of a level playing field of readable data. And it could make MySpace a lot better, too.“We don’t want to do anything without semantics, to be honest,” Monica Keller, group architect for activity streams at MySpace, told us by phone today. “We can’t afford to show a user content on their home page that they aren’t going to like.” At a time when MySpace is in serious trouble and trying to regroup, a home run by Keller and crew could make MySpace more relevant to people again and impact the rest of the web in positive ways radically unlike the impact of Facebook’s proprietary software.Keller told us today that MySpace is working on increasing the amount and sophistication of user activity updates on the site in a number of different ways. In case anyone is chuckling and thinking MySpace doesn’t matter, we should remember that only ten sites on the web are visited more often than MySpace still today. MySpace may be on the decline, but it’s still hugely important and these moves it’s making could help it become even more so.Adding “Write” FunctionalityMySpaceID currently allows sites around the web to offer sign-in using MySpace account credentials. The sites can then pull in some amount of a user’s data from MySpace and use it to personalize the experience they have on the new site – friends lists can be synced and taste information can be gleaned from a profile to customize recommendations, for example. The next step will be to bring in user activities from these third-party sites and display them in your MySpace user activity feed, much like Facebook Connect allows. This gives other sites access to distribution inside MySpace. Developers of other sites will be able to offer users the option of publishing their activities on these other sites back onto their MySpace profiles and friends’ activity feeds. Here’s how MySpace’s plan is unlike what Facebook is doing. The updates will be marked up for the types of activities they represent with standardized microformat code, beginning with the events format hCal and soon to include the book, movie or other review format hReview. Those little bits of code that will be added could have big consequences.Keller says the company acknowledges that this won’t be a small task for third-party developers, so in the meantime she is working on automated methods of pulling user data in from other sites’ Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and marking them up automatically, with the microformat code communicating what kind of updates they are (events, reviews, etc.)Why This is ImportantConsider this analogy: Mozilla has been good for the whole web because it pushed everyone to be more standards-compliant in the browser market and thus made it easier for developers to build stable, universally usable and more sophisticated applications. By giving the web a reason to build out software that publishes information in the standardized format of the Activity Streams spec and semantic microformats, MySpace grows the pie of that kind of data and gives developers a greater incentive to develop more in that same fashion. Standardized data is the soil in which fields of new applications grow. This kind of data normalization creates the level playing field of information that allows new applications to be written and scale up through accessing and processing large quantities of information that have effectively been translated into the same “language.” You want to build an application that processes hCal events? That will be a lot more appealing when the MySpace ecosystem of connected sites is all speaking that language.Keller says that MySpace and the community of people working on building a common Activity Streams specification for all sites have been working closely with the Open Social community, the Google-led cross-site application platform that competes with the Facebook App platform. Keller says MySpace’s new activity feed functionality will be delivered from within but extend upon the Open Social framework the company uses to connect with other sites now. There isn’t any indication yet that MySpace will make these marked-up updates available in bulk to developers for analysis; they will likely remain authenticated and limited in visibility to friends who have given approval. That would be an even bigger boost for innovation, but the promotion of the standardized data format is a huge step nonetheless. What’s In It for MySpace? So if this has a lot of potential to be good for the web – what’s in it for MySpace? Two things, primarily.First, as Facebook grows rapidly in both user numbers and integration with sites around the web through its similar product Facebook Connect, MySpace is no longer the center of the web for millions of people. This kind of product facilitates that kind of relationship, and offering outside developers write-access to MySpace will incentivize more of them to support ongoing user-connection with MySpace. The microformatted markup makes this a lot smarter than Facebook Connect, frankly. There is a risk that all the smarts in the world won’t interest people in MySpace’s declining profile, but the site remains one of the most popular on the web and a viable competitor to Facebook. (Facebook said they may or may not comment on this move by MySpace; we’re still waiting to see if they’d like to.)The goal for the program that Keller shared with us was different. She says that the microformats markup will enable the company to make smarter decisions in highlighting friends’ updates and offering users’ recommendations.Keller says that MySpace is working on and will soon deploy technology that closely monitors what kind of friend updates users show interest in. If I often click on your photos but never read your blog posts, or I am very interested in your book reviews but don’t care about your events listings, then MySpace will feature those kinds of your updates in my friends’ activity feeds more or less prominently. Knowing what kinds of activities are being brought in from other sites will help make that more possible. The same information will facilitate smarter recommendations of content you might like. That’s why Monica Keller says “We don’t want to do anything without semantics, to be honest. We can’t afford to show a user content on their home page that they aren’t going to like.” Watch for these new technologies to be announced in the coming weeks. They could have a big impact not just on the future of MySpace, but on much of the rest of the web as well.center_img Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts last_img read more

The Essay Structure of Video Editing

first_imgA good way to plan and edit a non-fiction piece is to structure the storyline like you would a formal essay. In this post we’ll take our cues from writing fundamentals and show you how.Think back to high school English class, and having to write essay after essay. I don’t know about you, but my english teachers drilled a very specific structure into my head for writing these essays and reports. This structure proved incredibly useful when I aced my college writing class, but I also realized over time that I was subconsciously using the basic fundamentals of essay organization in my videos – specifically non-fiction ones. Some of this came through in the initial planning stages, but a lot of the time I was handed several reels worth of interviews in the editing phase with no clear plan besides “this is what they want the video for.” The basic essay structure was incredibly useful in taking all of that content and forming it into a coherent piece that was easily followed by the audience. So, indulge me for a second while I recap “Essay Writing 101” for you and you’ll see how applying these concepts to an “essay structure” of editing can make things easier for you to edit together a cohesive story and easier for your audience to get the point. There are three important characteristics of a well-structured essay that can easily apply to editing a video: An “hourglass shape”, a thesis statement and a “roadmap”.The Hourglass ShapeThe idea behind the hourglass shape is to start broad: general background on your topic to introduce it to your audience. As the intro goes along, you quickly get more specific, ending with your thesis statement/main idea, which sets the tone for the main body of your content.Your main content stays specific to your subject and is meant to backup your thesis – it’s your evidence for your main point. Then at the end, you reach your summary. Your summary reiterates your thesis in a new way to sum everything up, then you start to get broader in topic, explaining why your main idea matters in the big picture of things. So: start with a broad background, get more specific until you reach your thesis (main idea), stay specific and support your thesis, sum it all up, then get more general and explain why it matters to your audience in the big picture. One advantage of structuring your video like this is that your audience doesn’t get thrown into the story “in medias res” (latin for “in the middle of things”). Starting “in medias res” is a great technique for narrative and fiction pieces, but it can often be a hindrance to non-fiction work, especially short form where you need to get the audience up to speed quickly.Another advantage is that you have a clear understanding when organizing the story of what will support your main idea and what won’t, so you can cut your content down to what really matters.A third advantage to structuring your video this way is that by finishing with how this relates to the big picture, you give a global/grand scale of importance to your message and leave this as the final lasting thought for the audience. The Thesis StatementThe thesis is the point you are trying to make. Every good essay and every good video try to make a point – a reason why the audience should pay attention. A good thesis has a number of components, but the main two that apply here are:A clear and specific message/point you are trying to get acrossEvidence to support your pointThere are actually three types of thesis statements: analytical, expository (explanatory), and argumentative ; these just so happen to fit well with common reasons someone would want a video! An analytical piece breaks down research/evidence on an issue into the key points so the audience can better understand it, and usually comes to a non-controversial fact-based conclusion (if it even has a conclusion). An expository piece explains something to the audience, but it’s not trying to make the audience think one way or another. An argumentative piece tries to convince the audience that an opinion or claim is true/valid and supports it with evidence. It can be similar to an argumentative piece, but the thesis and the conclusion drawn are subjective, even when supported by evidence.Knowing what type of piece you are editing informs what supporting content you need to find and how best to order that content. You need to know what you’re saying and you need to know how to back it up!The RoadmapOne of the things I was taught in school is that your essay thesis should contain the topics of your supporting evidence, and these topics should be arranged to match the order of your body paragraphs, basically creating a roadmap for your essay. For example: “People should do [thing] because of [evidence x], [evidence y], and [evidence z]”. The supporting body paragraphs would cover the topics of x, y, and z in that order. This gives the audience an understanding of what’s to come.In video, you don’t always have the luxury of having your talent or interviewee say that perfect statement that summarizes all of the evidence in the right order. What you do have is the ability to either create your roadmap ahead of time and make sure you get those topics covered, or you can group all of the content you have into the different topics and decide on what best supports your message and how best to arrange it for flow. This is the basic function of an editor, but you’d be surprised how many go right into laying things in the timeline without an actual plan in place! Having this “roadmap” lets you quickly sift through content to find what fits, have an idea of what transitional content you’ll need, and lay it all in the timeline without having to guess what order works best.A Practical ExampleEarlier this year I did a project for KIPP Academy in Nashville, TN, to be shown at a fundraising event for the expansion of the program from one middle school to K–12 and 6+ schools. I’ve written about this project before from a post-production perspective, but one thing I haven’t talked about is the planning. We sat down with some of the staff from KIPP, listened to their vision and reason for wanting this piece, and we asked them questions about the school, what the ultimate outcome they were trying to accomplish, etc. As we went through this meeting, I started forming a thesis and roadmap for the project.Their ultimate goal for the video was to “develop a case for why KIPP needs to grow” and based on that, why people should donate and invest in KIPP:I had my message, they had given me an idea of what evidence we would cover, so I drew out a (super messy) handwritten timeline in my notebook:Since you probably can’t read my terrible handwriting, here’s how it was structured:History of the schoolWhat they’ve done at the middle school (results)Where they’re going (goals for community impact)Practical (better high school & college grad rate, etc.)Personal (character building, neighborhood transformation, etc.) How the audience can helpYou can see how this initial idea of a timeline in pre-production came together:This “essay structure” of editing had a huge impact on how we made this video, but I use it on everything from small corporate testimonials to huge multi-interview videos for marketing campaigns. This structure can give you a head start in your planning, even when there wasn’t a plan in place to begin with. Give it a try and share your thoughts/experiences in the comments below!last_img read more

Modi’s remarks on Alwar rape aimed at polls: Gehlot

first_imgRefuting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks on the gangrape last month of a Dalit woman in Alwar, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday accused him of targeting the Congress on the issue for political mileage in the sixth and seventh phases of Lok Sabha election.Mr. Gehlot said Mr. Modi had twisted facts as a “ploy to get electoral benefit”.The Chief Minister told reporters here that contrary to Mr. Modi’s claims and despite his attempts to provoke Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati, there was no likelihood of the party withdrawing support to the Congress government in Rajasthan.“We will continue to get the BSP’s support. Ms. Mayawati’s concern is natural and justified, as she leads the Dalit community,” he said.Addressing the election rallies in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Modi had launched an attack on Mr. Gehlot and Ms. Mayawati and dared the latter to withdraw support to the Rajasthan government over the incident. Mr. Gehlot said the State government had already taken prompt action in the matter and the police had arrested all the accused. “The Thanagazi SHO was suspended and Alwar Superintendent of Police was removed. But Mr. Modi is using this incident in his election campaign to personally target me,” he said. The Chief Minister said the State government had decided to appoint Deputy Superintendents of Police (Women’s Security) in each district as nodal officers to supervise investigation into the crimes against women and children. If a police station refused to accept a complaint in such a case, the SP could directly register the FIR, he said.Mr. Gehlot said several cases of rape took place during the previous BJP regime in Rajasthan and a BJP MLA was involved in a rape case in Uttar Pradesh. “Mr. Modi never talked about them,” he said, adding that reports had emerged about BJP leader Hem Singh Bhadana going to the victim’s family with an offer to settle the matter.“Mr. Modi has been personally targeting me on various occasions. This is the latest instance. When I was in-charge [of Congress] during Assembly election in Gujarat, he misled and provoked farmers against me. He has no right to take a high moral ground and generate controversy in a rape case,” Mr. Gehlot said.Mr. Gehlot also accused the Prime Minister of bringing all democratic institutions under the control of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sevak (RSS) and threatening their very existence. “Democracy and the Constitution are under threat in the BJP’s rule. Mr. Modi wants to win the Lok Sabha election by hook or by crook… He can go to any extent. The Election Commission has become a silent spectator,” Mr. Gehlot said. After Mr. Modi accused Ms. Mayawati of shedding “crocodile tears” on the gangrape, the BSP chief rejected the charge as “dirty politics”. BSP State president Sitaram Meghwal told The Hindu that Ms. Mayawati was closely monitoring the progress of investigation in the case and his party would ensure that the criminals were brought to justice.last_img read more
